1. Please describe your practice as a Massage Therapist.

I own my own massage therapy practice which is called Kinderhook Therapeutic Massage in Valatie, NY.  I have three other LMTs using the space with me.

2. What is a typical week like for you?

I work three days a week at Kinderhook Therapeutic Massage where I typically see 4-5 clients.  I also work two evenings a week with developmentally disabled population at the Taconic DDSO houses providing massages for the consumers in their beds and wheelchairs.  Once a week I go to the home of a client who owns his own massage table and I give massages to him and his wife and sometimes his daughter or friends there.  Every other week or so I bring my massage chair to a community event or to Chatham Makes Scents to proved chair massage to the community.

3. How has your career as a Massage Therapist impacted your life?

I will never again dread going to work!  It doesn’t get much better than providing stress and pain relief to hard working people.  Virtually everyone leaves my office with a sigh and a smile and that is just so satisfying and gratifying for me!

4. What job or career did you have prior to becoming a Massage Therapist?

I was taking care of an elderly relative during the day and waitressing at night.

5. What inspired you to become a Massage Therapist?

I was taking care of an elderly aunt who suffered from multiple health issues and lived with chronic pain.  Rubbing her hands, legs, neck, and feet with lotion provided her with so much relief that it was amazing.  And then I received my first massage and couldn’t’ believe how just one hour of massage could provide me with such a sense of peace and well-being.  I was hooked!

6. What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in Massage Therapy?

Get some massages, preferable various types just for the experience.  And then talk to every massage therapist you can.  Ask them to share their experiences with you and ask for guidance and advice.  I find that massage therapists typically love their work and are enthusiastic about their careers.

7. Estimated annual income as a Massage Therapist (not including any other sources.)

$10,000 - $25,000
